David Fox designs Versity for Teknion

The design journey began with observations into how tree branches form organic curves from the main branches. This primary driver led towards the sketching of possible supporting structures, and how this could be integrated into the leg of a chair.

“branches reach for the sky in a positive direction, with an openness which is welcoming, like a mother opens their arms to a child before a comforting embrace”

“Comfort, positivity” from findings and initial investigations quickly became keywords and a philosophy in the development of Versity. The angled sides all around give a nurturing warming invitation for its user. “Come let me welcome you is the design message” in addition the soft organic curves of the arms and back cushions bear no aggression in their execution”

“from an outsider looking in Teknion`s pedigree is working with dynamic coporations, in areas of sometimes high architectural minimalist content. The material and design choice for the leg and underframe, had to be harmonious, and appeal to specifiers and architects alike, without forgetting reference to curvaceous nature.

Die cast aluminium offers engineered almost architectural appearance, its reflective polished nature draws emphasis to the sweeping curves and tapered stiletto like aesthetic, and seemed an obvious choice. These castings joined together with a D shaped tubular aluminium structure, that elevates the product from the floors horizon.”

As you approach Versity the underail frames the view providing flashes of complimentary purtity to its organic upper.

The ending design journey is Versity a well balanced, innovatively detailed sofa and chair range, a signature that is evident in the designers work, and has led to many internationally recognised awards.

We hope that the product gives you visually and ergomically as much satisfaction, as it did to work through the stages of development from concept to completion development.

Bloom Chair by David Fox part of the Jori collection

Bloom is the latest collaboration between award winning British designer David Fox, and Belgian manufacturer Jori, a company world re-known for producing high quality contemporary leather furniture.

“The germination of the idea was both process and nature driven, the soft elegant shapes as petals emerge from a closed chrysalis” Shapes that nature creates have been around for a long time, and continue always to promote beauty, and well balanced aesthetic proportions, filling each observer with joy, and happiness as it blooms!”

“From a design perspective I wanted to try and capture this in a comforting, embracing shape, so it seemed obvious to do a chair. As nature is about growth, other driver in this project, was the process element, 3D plywood technology has been around for some years, its relatively expensive due to the complexity of how it is formed, but its beautiful in the way soft double curves can be achieved, this shape pushes the limits of the technology, resulting in an element of technical prowess Some products have been introduced into the market using the process, however mainly within the stacking chair market which can be price sensitive and to my mind the wrong application, so to combine 3D veneer with a higher value lounge chair seemed a more plausible solution”

“The resulting “Bloom chair” is a venture into natures purism, with elegant petal like organic upholstered shapes, supported by a wooden veneered cup, and raised from its horizon the an aluminium polished fourstar base “Jori as a business have supported and believed the evolution of the product, and set aside significant tooling and development investment, to ensure product and detail longevity, this synergy matches my own belief of creating unique, well balanced timeless solutions” for further information contact sales@jori.com

10 Years of David Fox Design

This month David Fox celebrates 10 years of successful industrial and product design, over the coming weeks we would like to take you on a product journey, introducing some of the products, the philosophies that has made the company what it is today. Company Owner, and designer David Fox graduated with a BA (hons) in Industrial design from the University of Teesside in 1996.

David spent 5 years in a design and design management position with Yorkshire based tubular bedroom furniture manufacturer Jay-be ltd.

In 2002 geared with a broad understanding of the retail furniture sector, and experience in a wide range of manufacturing techniques, David established 4orm Design, an industrial / Product design consultancy.

Cap in hand, he offered his services to the domestic sector, despite many a success in developing high volume selling contemporary beds, the market was not receptive to his future thought, and felt it was easier to buy from china, than to innovate and craft new philosophies.

Seduced by Italian chair design at the time, David set about trying to persuade the UK contract chair manufacturers to give him ago, with no experience In this sector, found the going very tough. Undeterred he set about designing 4 chairs. One being the ever popular Kruze, which is now produced by boss design, Smile which was taken by Nomique, Korus became a connection product, and Zone, for pledge office chairs.

In 2009 the business changed over to David Fox design, a name more suited to the designer.

10 years from conception, David Fox has had the pleasure of working in varied sectors from contract furniture and fabric, through to bathroom brassware, his varied clients have Included :-

Tonon Italia, Boss Design, Connection, Ocee Design, Naughtone, BMA Nomique, Crofts and Assinder, Pledge Office Chairs, Mission Speakers, Camira Fabrics, Vado.

We hope the products have given as much enjoyment, as they did to create, and would like to thank everyone that has specified or supported the Company in its quest, and optimistically look forward to the next decade.

Many thanks.
